On behalf of all in the BIR Paper Division, I would like to express my sincere sadness at the vast loss of life suffered by the Japanese people in the March earthquake and tsunami. Our thoughts are with all their families and friends.

The New Year began with concerns over the shifting trends in the Western and developing economies caused by increases in oil prices, interest rates and unemployment, as well as fears of inflation against a backdrop of buoyant growth forecasts for leading emerging economies, namely China, India, Indonesia, Brazil and Mexico.
