What a difference a few months makes or even a few days! At the time of writing this (Mid May) Nickel has hit a recent high not seen since 2012.
The banning of raw ore exports from Indonesia has played a significant role in the recent rise and although several nickel-processing projects may be completed this year in Indonesia it is unlikely that there will be a related wave of supply arising and some analysts believe that nickel may remain in deficit for a few years to come.
There are reportedly nickel related 50 projects at various stages of development in Indonesia but more than half are at planning and permit stage and 15-20 in construction. It is possible that Indonesia could become the second largest Stainless/NPI producer some time in the mid to latter 2020’s.
Global demand for scrap appears robust inspite of discounts at lower than recent levels our Miami convention session features presentations by two of the world’s leading stainless steel scrap processors followed by a “fire side chat” with the two of them. One will give the North American perspective and the other the European perspective. It will be an extremely interesting and lively session.
