BIR World Recycling Convention (Round-Table Sessions) Prague, (25) 26-27 October 2015:
Plastics Committee (also of interest to Shredder Committee delegates): Plastic scrap in shredder residues and sustainability of plastics recycling
The BIR Plastics Committee under the chairmanship of Mr Surendra Patawari Board of Gemini Recycling (BEL) will have guest presentations on quite different topics during their plenary meeting in Prague on Monday, 26 October 2015 at 16.00.
The topic “Sustainability assessment of plastics recycling: a case study of PET” will be addressed by Dr Li Shen, Assistant Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University (The Netherlands). Dr Shen studied mechanical engineering at University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai, China (BEng, 1999). Since 2003 she was following the Master programme Sustainable Development, track Energy and Resources, at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, and graduated in 2006 (MSc). From 2006 to 2011 she worked at the Copernicus Institute at Utrecht University and obtained her PhD for her thesis “Bio-based and Recycled Polymers for Cleaner Production – an Assessment of Plastics and Fibres”. Between 2011 and 2012 she worked as a scientific researcher at the Agricultural Economics Institute, Wageningen University and Research Centre, the Netherlands, before she joined the Utrecht University again. Dr Shen’s research interests include technology assessment and system analysis of bio-based materials, nano materials and plastics recycling, particularly in the context of energy and material efficiency and climate change.
In a presentation that will create a bridge between scrap recyclers / shredder operators and plastics recyclers, Mr Manuel Burnand of Derichebourg and new chairman of the BIR Shredder Committee has agreed to provide “Some guidances to handle automobile shredder residue including plastics scrap". After he graduated at the Mechanical and Aeronautical School of Engineering in France in 1986, Mr Burnand started his career at Renault where he was part of the Recycling Direction since 1991. The End-of-Life-Vehicle treatment gave him insight into recycling and recycling ability. Since 2000 he became involved in car recycling at Derichebourg, and in 2009 he started to participate in the BIR Shredder Committee. In 2011 he became Chairman of the European Shredder Group and Chairman of the French Recycling association Shredder Commission FEDEREC. Currently he is also involved in the recycling of batteries from electronic and hybrid cars and recycling of plastics.
