Chinese plastics recycling association joins BIR

For many years BIR is trying to develop its Plastics Committee into a Plastics Division. However in order to become a Division, a Commodity Committee needs to be supported by a certain number of companies and national associations which agree to pay membership fees to financially contribute to the creation of a fully independent Commodity Division and the participation of experts from that field.

The Bureau of International Recycling recently made a step forward in this direction and is pleased to announce that the China Scrap Plastics Association has decided to become a BIR member in the wake of the recent BIR World Recycling Convention in Shanghai.

BIR is hoping that China Scrap Plastics Association’s membership will boost the BIR Plastics Committee and attract other associations and companies from that sector worldwide. China is an important market for Plastics recyclables and BIR needs a professional body in this country to ensure environmentally sound processing and recycling of Plastics, as well as the development of new markets and outlets for plastics granulates and recyclables in emerging countries where the demand will continue to grow.

Plastics Committee Chairman Surendra Borad of Gemini Corporation (Belgium) was instrumental in getting the Chinese recycling body on board.

The China Scrap Plastic Association, which was founded in 2012 in Hong Kong, comprises 120 member companies active in the recycling of plastics, with a total import volume of 3 million tonnes.

Current Executive President of the association is Dr Steve Wong, whose company Fukutomi has been a BIR member since 2011.
