“ Global green ambassador” wins Papyrus prize

The Chairlady and founder of the world’s largest recovered paper-based paper manufacturer, the Nine Dragons Group, has become the latest recipient of the Papyrus prize which recognises the achievements of individuals, companies and organisations making a substantial contribution to paper recycling. Ms Cheung Yan was presented with this special BIR Paper Division award at its meeting on May 28 at the BIR World Recycling Convention in Shanghai.

With Ms Yan at the helm, Nine Dragons has become the largest containerboard product producer in China and Asia (including Japan) and one of the largest producers in the world in terms of design production capacity. The constantly-expanding group manufactures and sells linerboard, high performance corrugating medium and coated duplex board, as well as recycled printing and writing paper, pulp and specialty paper. The company’s extensive use of recovered paper as a raw material has also helped to underpin the collection and recycling of recovered paper within China.

In conferring this accolade, divisional President Ranjit S. Baxi of UK-based J&H Sales International described Ms Cheung as a “great business leader”, a “champion” of the recycling industry and a “global green ambassador”. He also praised her promotion of healthy supply chain partnerships.

Ms Cheung expressed her honour at receiving the “coveted” Papyrus prize, hailing paper recycling as a “very meaningful” and “sustainable” industry. She insisted: “We are the protectors of the environment - not the trouble-makers for the environment”. She went on to confirm that Nine Dragons’ annual production capacity would grow from 13.5m tonnes in 2013 to 15m tonnes in 2015.
