Mr Raymond George
It is with great sadness that BIR announces the decease of Mr Raymond George, Past Vice-President and Treasurer of BIR and former CEO of George SA (Belgium), who passed away in the early hours of Friday, 26 June 2015, at the age of 79.
Raymond George had been an active member of the BIR leadership for over 30 years and had become the youngest Vice-President of the organisation at the age of 30. Due to his commitment and proactive approach he was elected BIR Treasurer five times in a row. For almost 20 years he managed BIR’s finances and was therefore instrumental in the development and growth of the world recycling body. Mr George was also Vice-President of the Ferrous Division between 1970 and 1990.
In parallel to his involvement with BIR, he initiated the creation of the Liaison Committee for Ferrous Scrap within the EU (COFENAF) which subsequently became the European Ferrous Recovery and Recycling Federation EFR.
Mr George had a strong personality with an iconoclastic sense of humour and was never afraid of going off the beaten track to push forward projects he believed in. Enthusiastic and energetic, he was a strong leader and inspirational visionary.
BIR extends its deepest condolences to his wife France George-Tombeur and his family.
A funeral service will be held on 1 July 2015 at Saint Vincent Church in Liège, Belgium.
