PRESIDENT'S OPENING REMARKS

First of all, I would like to express my delight that the recent BIR Convention in Munich attracted over 1000 delegates, many of whom were involved in the ferrous scrap business. Our plenary session was very well attended - a fact which, of course, can be attributed also to the quality of our two guest speakers.
Professor Dr. Karl-Ulrich Köhler, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Steel Europe, board member of Worldsteel Association and Vice President of Eurofer, made a brilliant presentation entitled “Championing the Sustainability of Steel”. Professor Köhler’s name has appeared frequently in the media of late as Tata Steel Europe is undergoing a huge and ambitions investment programme regarding its European steel mills.
In his optimistic keynote speech, Professor Köhler showed the important part played by sustainability of steel. He emphasised the need to produce steel products for the future, to enhance sustainability performance for customers, to improve existing processes with a focus on safety, waste, energy and CO2, to invest in sustainable steelmaking and, last but not least, to facilitate the recycling loop. He pointed out that his company will maximise the use of steel scrap which remains “structurally scarce”...
